ABOUT ME

Hello, I'm Alya Mey Dormen

My journey through life has been a mix of diverse experiences and passions. I was born in Dubai on February 2nd, 2005. Thanks to my dad’s ever-changing job (which involved quite a bit of moving), our family found ourselves in Istanbul in 2010 and Mumbai in 2016, where I discovered my deep love for dance.

My high school adventure started at ArtsED in London, where I found the right balance between my passion for dance and my commitment to academics. However, due to the unexpected turn of events brought on by the global pandemic, I returned to my home country, Turkey, and have since continued my education at MEFIS in Istanbul. Currently, I am in the final year of high school, striving to maintain a well-rounded education that matches my wide range of interests.

Dance has been an integral part of my life for over 12 years. My journey has taken me to incredible places, including achieving the advanced 1 level in ballet for the Royal Academy of Dance, becoming the youngest company dancer at The Danceworx India, dancing in two national musicals on the largest stage in Turkey (after being selected from 500 dancers!), delivering a solo performance to an audience of 40,000 at Turkey’s largest festival, the Portakal Cicek Festivali. In addition, I have shared my love for dance by teaching children to raise awareness about the importance of the HPV vaccine in Turkey, while using the money earned to support vaccinations for children in need as it is not provided free of cost in Turkey.

At the young age of 12, I was dedicating 35 hours a week to dance. Today, I continue to maintain this schedule, while also juggling the demands of IB2 and participating in the two musicals which have weekly shows.

My dedication to excellence and being the best version of myself is not limited to dance. Incredibly, (still a mystery on how) I received the highest academic GPA award at MEFIS during my IB1 year and continue to try my best to work at this standard.

However, my greatest passion is performing. The opportunity to step into different characters, express my emotions through music, and convey messages through dance is an unparalleled thrill. I firmly believe that the performing arts possess a unique power to convey a universal language of emotions, from pain to joy, and to bring about healing.

To me, dance is not just a personal pursuit; it’s a vessel for positive change. I am dedicated to using my love for dance to make a difference, whether through initiatives like my HPV dance project, raising awareness about global issues through dance, or participating in events in to spread knowledge and advocate for change like for World Disability Day, where I had the privilege of dancing alongside someone who had lost movement in both their legs.I am also passionate about teaching and strive to be the kindest person I can be to those around me.

In my daily life, I strive to be a source of support and encouragement for those around me. Whether it’s by offering help, lending a listening ear, or simply sharing a kind word, I want to make the world a bit brighter for others. I truly believe that even the smallest acts of kindness can have a profound impact on the lives of those we meet.
